Located in Kingston, 186 Frontenac Street, was constructed in 1934. The house displays influences of the Modern style, but lacks the clarity and crispness typically found in buildings of this type. Nevertheless, the home was well scaled and constructed in a compatible material palette allowing it to reinforce the overall context of the surrounding neighbourhood. The owner proposed expanding the house substantially at the rear to provide housing for university students at the nearby Queens University.
MTBA prepared a Cultural Heritage Impact Statement (CHIS) report based on a range of research sources including site reviews, city planning documents, provincial guidelines, and historical documents. The final document summarized this research, provided a review of the proposed design, and outlined a series of mitigation strategies to successfully attain community consensus on an intervention to this heritage house in a heritage district.
