Pre-dating the current surge in downtown condominium developments by two decades, The St-George was conceived and built in the mid-1980’s, helping to revitalize a derelict part of the Byward Market area. As a large urban mixed use complex, The St-George comprises five floors of underground parking, two floors of commercial space, a health club with pool and terrace on the third floor and twenty-two floors of condo residences.
As the Project Architect, Mark Brandt was a key member of the architect team with the former Ala-Kantii Associates. Brandt directed the design development, the contract documents (technical drawings and specifications) and construction review. Brandt developed, for example, the key elements of lobby and common area design and oversaw the entire project throughout its almost two year design and construction.
Other design innovations included in the project were specialized landscaping features, multi-hued glass curtain wall cladding, and urban design integration into the public realm. Decades after its construction, the surrounding area is being fully redeveloped with new condominium buildings, nevertheless Le St George continues to hold its own for design, urban interaction and value.
